Hoe draag je een katoenen sweatshirt comfortabel?

How do you wear a cotton sweatshirt comfortably?

Last updated: October 29, 2026

Quick Summary

For a comfortable fit, choose a cotton sweatshirt made from 100% combed cotton, with the right fit at the shoulder seam, armhole, chest and waist, and wear a thin cotton layer underneath. Wash it inside out at a maximum of 30°C and air-dry it or tumble-dry it briefly on low; this will help it stay soft and keep its shape.

  • Brushed fleece feels cozy and retains warmth; French terry feels cooler if you tend to get warm quickly.
  • In an oversized fit, the shoulder seam intentionally sits 3-6 cm lower because of the dropped shoulders.
  • Test your range of motion by reaching your arms forward, raising your hands above your head and gently twisting your torso.
  • Wash at 30°C with 30-40 ml of neutral liquid detergent and spin at a maximum of 800 rpm.
  • Turn the sweatshirt inside out and fasten the zippers to keep a front print crisp for longer.

Why a cotton sweatshirt is comfortable to wear

A cotton sweatshirt is comfortable because the fiber feels soft, absorbs moisture and lets your skin breathe. A sweatshirt made from 100% combed cotton wears differently from a cotton blend with a lot of polyester.

You really notice the difference when you wear it all day.

Softness, breathability and moisture absorption

Cotton is naturally soft and absorbs moisture well. That's exactly why a cotton sweatshirt is so comfortable to wear.

Combed cotton goes one step further. During combing, short fibers are removed, making the fabric smoother. Read why combed ring-spun cotton is better and what that means for softness and durability.

What this means in practice:

  • The inside feels soft against bare skin
  • Sweat is absorbed instead of trapped
  • The fabric stays breathable, even when you're indoors with the heating on

Brushed fleece or French terry on the inside

The inside of a sweatshirt determines how it feels. There are two common finishes.

Brushed fleece has a soft, slightly fluffy inside. It feels cozy and retains warmth. French terry has small loops instead of fluff. It feels cooler and is more comfortable if you tend to get warm quickly.

Our HTT.009 Identity Heavyweight Oversized Sweatshirt has a soft fleece interior of 339 GSM. The HTT BLANKS 440GSM Heavyweight Crewneck has a more structured feel, with 100% combed cotton and a dense drape.

Choosing a sweatshirt fit for freedom of movement

A cotton sweatshirt is comfortable only when the fit is right at four points: shoulder seam, armhole, chest and waist. Below, we explain what to look for and how to measure them yourself.

The four measurement points

  • Shoulder seam: sits right at your shoulder point in a regular fit. In an oversized fit, the seam intentionally sits 3-6 cm lower (dropped shoulders). That's the look, not a sizing mistake.
  • Armhole: extend your arm horizontally. The armhole shouldn’t cut into your armpit, and the sleeve shouldn’t ride up.
  • Chest: lay a sweatshirt that fits you well flat and measure from armpit to armpit. Double that measurement and compare it with your chest circumference plus 6-10 cm for a relaxed fit.
  • Waist: the hem of a crewneck should fall just over your waistband. Too short and it rides up when you sit; too long and it bunches.

Regular, relaxed, and oversized

  • Oversized fit: intentionally roomier. Choose your usual size for the intended silhouette; if you want a closer fit, go one size down.

Test your freedom of movement

Do these three checks before keeping a sweatshirt:

  1. Reach your arms forward as if holding a steering wheel. The shoulder seam shouldn’t pull upward.
  2. Raise your hands above your head. The hem shouldn’t rise above your waistband.
  3. Turn your torso slightly. The fabric shouldn’t pull tight across your back.

With an oversized fit, these checks are more forgiving, but make sure the sleeves don’t cover your hands and the waist doesn’t hang too low.

Size chart and product photos

Our crewnecks have an oversized fit with dropped shoulders. Check the size chart in the product photos for the exact measurements for each size. Unsure about your size? See how to choose the right hoodie fit using a few simple measurements.

What to wear under a sweatshirt

A lightweight cotton or cotton-blend layer works best under a sweatshirt. A basic T-shirt almost always works.

Our setup:

  • Cool days: a long-sleeved top or a thicker T-shirt underneath
  • Mild weather: a lightweight T-shirt, or wear the sweatshirt directly against your skin
  • Indoors with the heating on: a cotton shirt or T-shirt, so you can wear the sweatshirt on its own

A rule of thumb: the thinner the layer underneath, the more you’ll feel the sweatshirt’s soft interior.

Styling a cotton sweatshirt for everyday wear

Styling a cotton sweatshirt is easy: keep the rest of your outfit simple and let the sweatshirt do the work. Loose-fit jeans, straight-leg pants, or cargos all work.

For a casual look, pair a sweatshirt with straight-leg pants and white sneakers. Want a sharper look? Tuck the front of your T-shirt in and choose dark pants.

People sometimes pair an oversized sweatshirt with pants that are too wide. This can make your silhouette disappear. Choose one oversized item and keep the rest more fitted.

Comfortable layering: warmth for cooler days

Layering can be comfortable when the base layer is thin and breathable.

On cool days:

  • Thin cotton T-shirt as a base layer
  • Sweatshirt on top
  • Add a jacket or overshirt on top when it gets really cold

On milder days, leave the outer layer at home. The sweatshirt can do the job on its own.

Consider the thickness of your layers. A 440GSM sweatshirt under a tight jacket can quickly feel stifling. Choose a roomier outer layer or a lighter sweatshirt instead.

How to wash a cotton sweatshirt without losing its shape

Wash a cotton sweatshirt inside out at no more than 30°C with a mild detergent.

Wash settings

  • Temperature: 30°C, up to 40°C for stubborn stains. Temperatures above 40°C speed up shrinking and color fading.
  • Cycle: delicate or a short cotton cycle, with a spin speed of no more than 800 rpm.
  • Load: wash the sweatshirt with similar colors, not with heavy items such as jeans with zippers.
  • Detergent: a neutral liquid detergent, about 30-40 ml for a normal load. No bleach, and don’t use fabric softener on the fleece inside.

Turn inside out and fasten zippers

Turn the sweatshirt inside out before putting it in the drum. This reduces wear on the outside and keeps a front print sharp for longer. Fasten zippers and hook-and-loop fasteners on other garments, or they can snag the fabric.

Drying

  • Air drying: hang the sweatshirt on a wide hanger or lay it flat on a drying rack. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Tumble drying: only on a low setting (60°C maximum) and for a short time. High-heat tumble drying is the fastest way to shrink a sweatshirt.
  • Ironing: turn inside out and iron at a low temperature, or steam the sweatshirt on a hanger.

Our fabrics are pre-shrunk, but that doesn’t mean they can withstand anything.

Stains and odors

  • Sweat odor: wash at 30°C with an enzyme-based detergent, and dry completely before folding the sweatshirt.
  • Stains: dab with a damp cloth and a little mild detergent, then wash as usual. Don’t rub, as this can stretch the fibers out of shape.
