Heavyweight Streetwear Guide: GSM, Oversized Fit & Cotton
Deel
Heavyweight streetwear is about more than just a logo or graphic. The fabric, weight, and especially the fit determine how a garment drapes. That is why modern streetwear is increasingly focused on heavyweight hoodies, oversized T-shirts, boxy fits, and heavier cotton fabrics.
At HTT Streetwear, we build our collections around fit, fabric, and identity. In this guide, we explain what GSM means, why heavyweight cotton drapes differently, and how to choose the right oversized streetwear.
What does GSM mean in streetwear?
GSM stands for grams per square metre and indicates the weight of one square metre of fabric. A higher GSM number does not automatically mean better quality: it mainly says something about the weight and structure of the fabric. For example, a 280 GSM T-shirt serves a different purpose than a 440 GSM hoodie.
For a sturdy boxy T-shirt, 280 GSM can already create a distinctive heavyweight feel. For hoodies and sweaters, 380, 400, 420, or 440 GSM provides more weight and structure.
Why heavyweight streetwear drapes differently
A heavier fabric can retain more of its shape. As a result, dropped shoulders, wide sleeves, and an oversized or boxy silhouette stand out more clearly. A well-designed oversized garment is therefore not simply a few sizes larger: the proportions and construction have to be right.
440 GSM heavyweight hoodie
The HTT BLANKS 440GSM Sun Faded Heavyweight Hoodie combines a heavy cotton fabric with an oversized silhouette. This type of hoodie is intended for those looking for a sturdy, structured streetwear fit rather than a thin standard hoodie.
Oversized and boxy are not the same
An oversized fit provides extra room around the body and often features wider shoulders and sleeves. A boxy fit focuses more strongly on proportions: relatively wide, straight, and often more compact in length. The combination of heavyweight cotton and a boxy fit works especially well for T-shirts because the fabric has enough structure to retain its shape.
The HTT BLANKS Boxy T-Shirt uses 280 GSM heavyweight cotton as the foundation for a sturdy boxy streetwear fit.
Heavyweight hoodies from 380 to 440 GSM
Not every heavyweight hoodie has to feel the same. Our 380 GSM Heavyweight Turtleneck Hoodie features a distinctive turtleneck construction, while the 400 GSM Heavyweight Zip Hoodie offers a heavy zip-up option.
For those looking for the maximum heavyweight feel, the 440 GSM hoodie is at the heavier end of our current blanks. The right weight depends on the silhouette and how you want to wear the garment.
Heavyweight sets: hoodie and sweatpants as a complete outfit
Heavyweight streetwear also works well as a complete set. Combining the top and bottom in the same visual direction creates a cohesive outfit in which the fit and fabric take centre stage.

Heavyweight crewnecks as an alternative to a hoodie
A crewneck creates a similarly sturdy silhouette without a hood. This results in a cleaner neckline and makes the garment easy to combine or layer.
The HTT BLANKS 440GSM Heavyweight Crewneck combines heavyweight fabric with a washed black oversized look. For a more graphic design, you can also check out the HTT Wear Your Identity Heavyweight Crewneck.
Minimal streetwear versus graphic streetwear
Heavyweight streetwear does not automatically have to be minimalist. HTT BLANKS focuses on fabric, silhouette, and construction, while other HTT designs add graphics and statements. This allows you to choose whether the garment’s shape or the graphic becomes the most important element of your outfit.
One example is the HTT Chaos Theory Tee: an oversized graphic T-shirt that allows you to build an outfit around the back print.
How do you wear oversized heavyweight streetwear?
An oversized hoodie or sweater works best when the rest of the outfit supports the same proportions. For example, pair it with loose-fit denim, workwear pants, or relaxed sweatpants. For a relaxed outfit, you can combine different shades of the same color. If you want to make a graphic the focal point, keep the rest of the outfit simpler.

Which GSM should you choose?
There is no universally perfect GSM number. For a T-shirt, 280 GSM can already feel sturdy and heavyweight. A 380 or 400 GSM hoodie offers more weight and structure, while 420 and 440 GSM can feel even heavier. Therefore, in addition to GSM, consider the material, fit, dropped shoulders, length, construction, and finish.
